Characterizing the 2020 Consumer DataSphere and StorageSphere

By: David MyhrerResearch Vice President, John RydningResearch Vice President, Global Datasphere

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective delves deeper into the makeup and characterization of the consumer DataSphere and StorageSphere and analyzes how consumers manage the data they actively create, where they store the data they create, and how they utilize the data storage capacity available on their personal devices.

"Over the past decade, the data created and stored by consumers in the consumer DataSphere has sprawled over a wide variety of devices and cloud storage services," said John Rydning, research vice president, IDC's Global DataSphere. "Generally, consumers have ample storage capacity available on their personal devices and in the cloud, which leads to a passive, lackadaisical, and convenience-based approach to storing and managing the unique, original data they create."

"Most U.S. consumers take a very pragmatic approach, expending minimal effort while ensuring they have redundant backup," added David Myhrer, research vice president, IDC's U.S. Consumer Technology Strategy Service. "It's important to remember that not everyone falls into that general pattern, though, with one segment a much better target for active file management and storage solutions."
