The AEC Industry Transforms Through Digital and Data

By: Jeffrey HojloResearch Vice President, Future of Industry Ecosystems & Product Innovation Strategies

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight examines the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, which continues to rapidly shift from siloed old technology to data-driven, digital, and model based. The building life cycle is complex and multifaceted, yet design, preconstruction, cost estimation, bidding, project management, and operations often are often disconnected. This is changing, as organizations in this market strive to establish a unified view of data-rich models that can be used to ensure quality, safety, and project execution.

In July 2020, we fielded IDC's 2020 Industry IT and Communications Survey, our annual analysis into how organizations across industry are investing and planning to invest in technology, new technology approaches, and their organization. We recently looked at the construction cut of this data, which further verified the aforementioned trends in this industry. Although construction firms are relatively immature in their digital transformation journey, after progressing through the downturn of the pandemic, they are planning to adopt big data and analytics, AI, IoT, and robotics to automate and improve decision making as they work with increasingly complex data sets.
