IDC TechBrief: Edge Computing for Retail

By: Margot JurosResearch Manager, Retail Technology Strategies

Abstract

This IDC TechBrief discusses the growing use of edge computing solutions in retail, with a growing number of retailers planning investment in edge within the next two years, according to IDC surveys. Edge computing brings data analysis and storage closer to devices where the data is generated, such as in-store-based real-time applications or remote monitoring supply chain applications, rather than sending data to datacenter for processing. With the significant growth in the amount of data generated in applications, retailers are finding the benefits of edge computing to optimize data-intensive solutions, particularly for critical real-time applications, such as mobile POS or remote cold chain monitoring.

"As retailers grow their use of data-intensive applications as part of their digital transformation journeys, they are realizing the real benefits of edge computing in gaining improved customer experience and increased revenue as applications work more quickly and smoothly for optimized performance," says Margot Juros, research manager, Worldwide Retail Technology Strategies at IDC.
