Evaluating Agile and PPM Solutions with ServiceNow and Customer Reference Context

By: Melinda-Carol BallouResearch Director, Agile ALM, Quality & Portfolio Strategies

Abstract

This IDC Perspective is one in a series of IDC studies that examine a range of collaborative work management, agile, and project and portfolio management (PPM) solutions and provide both vendor analysis and customer reference context for technology adoption and user buyer decision making. This document is a follow on to our four-part PPM-related IDC MarketScape series and assesses the agile and PPM strategy of ServiceNow, a vendor targeting the cloud with PPM, analytics, and ML capabilities. We discuss ServiceNow's agile, PPM, and DevOps product portfolio. ServiceNow's platform ubiquity; combined functionality for agile, PPM, DevOps, and ITSM; and focused product capability position the company well for pressing user needs across agile and PPM. We discuss ServiceNow relative to trends in user adoption for agile PPM, IT PPM, and DevOps and increased capabilities for enterprise adoption. We do so in the context of an overall economy that is volatile in unprecedented ways with global remote work as we evolve from a pandemic driving high demand and adoption for collaborative work management and PPM. We also include summaries of ServiceNow customer references, including a $29-billion-a-year global food producer with over 130,000 employees (seeking to provide detailed information and analysis of the costs and scope of ongoing technology projects) and a major university and hospital system with 16,000 employees needing to support widespread automation projects across its facilities.

"IDC sees adoption of agile PPM, value stream management, and PPM solutions for dynamic execution and innovative decision making via automation to enable adaptive responsiveness to changing initiatives," said Melinda Ballou, research director, IDC's Agile ALM, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies service. "Complementing these capabilities, increasingly, we observe demand for adaptive planning and coordination for DevOps from development through to operations with effective collaboration, workflow, and intuitive interfaces coordinated with project and portfolio management approaches for businesses and emerging smart analytics. It is in part due to these trends that IDC has chosen to prioritize this as one of several areas of focus for a series of end user–oriented, updated vendor analyses that include customer summaries, as a follow on to our IDC MarketScape series evaluating PPM automation."
