This IDC Market Perspective discusses reported semiconductor shortages and inventory issues, the causes, how companies are currently addressing the issue, the outlook for different markets, and potential strategies to address the market.
"IDC does not see semiconductor shortages across all industries. The automotive industry semiconductor shortages were largely self-inflicted due to conservative planning by OEMs. Capacity investment decisions made a number of years ago limited the semiconductor industry's ability to respond to sudden change, but supply issues for this market should improve gradually over the next couple of quarters," says Nina Turner, research manager, IDC's Worldwide Semiconductor Application Forecaster.
