Ten Years Later, the Durbin Amendment Looms Large
Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses recent events in the United States impacting the cost of payment acceptance. Ten years after the passage of the Durbin Amendment, the push for regulation in electronic payments is heating up again in response to actions proposed by the card networks.
According to Aaron Press, research director, Worldwide Payment Strategies at IDC, "Recent events in the payments industry have caught the attention of legislators and turned the spotlight back on payment acceptance costs. While this is not exactly the environment that led the Durbin Amendment in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, it's useful to look at the history of payment regulation to understand what is happening and how to plan for the future."
