U.S. Hearables Market Shares, 2020: Apple Thrives During Pandemic

By: Ramon T. LlamasResearch Director, Mobile Devices and AR/VR

Abstract

This IDC study provides vendor market shares for the U.S. hearables market for 2020.

"Hearables took center stage in the 2020 U.S. wearables market," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables team. "Users sought these in droves when the pandemic hit, allowing them to enjoy a modicum of privacy when consuming their own audio content, and then easily slipping into a teleconference or a phone call when needed. This provided vendors with ample opportunity and helped move the market closer to 100 million units in a single year.

"Similarly, the value opportunity reached new heights, totaling $8.9 billion for the year," adds Llamas. "Apple's reign at the top continued, locking up nearly 70% of all value once you include Beats' value market share. Meanwhile, the remaining vendors with significantly smaller volumes and/or lower price points were left competing for the remainder, with each one taking single-digit shares. This underscores how much Apple has locked up the U.S. market."
