The Future of Connectedness: Secure Networks and Unified Communications Are Top Investment Priorities for Maintaining Agile Enterprise Operations

By: Paul HughesResearch Director, Future of Connectedness

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight provides insight into where enterprises are prioritizing investments in connectivity as they transform their organizations to become more agile. This document contains data from IDC's Future Enterprise Resiliency and Spending (FERS) Wave 4 Survey conducted in May of 2021. The purpose of the FERS survey series (12 monthly surveys) is to explore a range of topics related to IT spending priorities, digital resiliency, and technology/organizational priorities in the next normal. In FERS Wave 4 Survey, IDC explored worldwide enterprise expectations for spending on remote worker connectivity platforms and services, including VPN, mobile broadband, and dedicated business broadband lines. It segmented results based on planned spending changes for 2021 versus 2020. The survey solicited replies from 832 respondents across the United States, Europe, and Asia/Pacific, as well as across a range of industries.

"Keeping employees connected securely and cost efficiently remains a key priority for connectivity spending over the next 12 months. Investments in secure private networks and cloud-based unified communications platforms emphasize the importance of safeguarding networks and data, without jeopardizing the desire to improve employee connectivity, collaboration and, ultimately, productivity." — Paul Hughes, research director, Future of Connectedness at IDC
