Abstract

This IDC Market Note provides insights into the 2021 Brooklyn 6G Summit, which brought together academics, vendors, and thought leaders with the goal of looking beyond 5G and discussing the road map and current research progressing toward the sixth generation of cellular networking. Despite the 5G to 6G name change, the summit's discussion remained squarely focused on the current status, and near-term developments, of the 5G world, framing the incremental improvements in 5G coming from future 3GPP releases as foundational for understanding what features and performance specifications will need to be a part of 6G.

"Just as the development of 5G began in the early days of LTE commercialization, the shifting focus of academic and technological research toward 6G is essential to ensuring a seamless progression of connectivity innovation," says Jason Leigh, research manager, 5G and Mobile Services research. "6G's ability to build on the higher performing, more reliable wireless connectivity that emerges from 5G will be essential for further shifting the connectivity paradigm to a 'wireless first' world."
