Evaluating the Roles of Edge and Cloud in Operational Technology

By: Jonathan LangResearch Manager, Worldwide IT/OT Convergence Strategies, Leif EriksenResearch Vice President, Future of Operations

Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides a framework for organizations to evaluate hosting and architectural options for deploying operational technology (OT) applications and workloads currently and in the future. IT/OT convergence is creating new choices for enterprises about where to host operations technology workloads to succeed in their pursuit of new and expanded use cases. To aid in the decision making around the required strategic architecture, IDC has developed a framework for evaluating OT workloads against emerging deployment options.

"Companies are already faced with the task of rationalizing heterogeneous legacy systems with newer technologies, and they're now being asked to make sense of where to host them," says Jonathan Lang, research manager, IDC's Worldwide IT/OT Convergence Strategies research program. "Compounding these choices are varying incentives for vendors to promote one model over another, in some cases, ignoring the unique risk and decision-making requirements in operations settings."
