Abstract

This IDC study analyzes the shift in computing across the entire internet system landscape. In addition, the research also highlights the interdependencies between compute and the global DataSphere. This ongoing evolution in data creation, complexity of framework models, and intelligence requirements of new systems expands the choice of computing architectures used as features and optimizations are aligned in unison with the growth of IoT endpoints and edge infrastructure.

"Over time, optimized computing architectures and intelligent systems that are enabled by these SoCs will all be capable of not just inferencing but learning (training) locally and bringing the same cloud services directly to the edge," said Mario Morales, group VP for IDC. "Enterprises will continue to partition their hardware requirements between cloud and edge infrastructure. In a few large industries like automotive and industrial, where functional safety regulation is so critical, the adoption will accelerate in favor of edge infrastructure."
