Future of Digital Infrastructure 2Q21 Agenda Survey: U.S. Enterprise Perspectives on Flexible Consumption and Autonomous Operations
Abstract
This IDC Survey summarizes selected results from IDC's Future of Digital Infrastructure 2Q21 Agenda Survey, conducted in June 2021. The study considers how United States–based enterprises are making strategic choices about the deployment, consumption, and operation of their overall digital infrastructure estate spanning computing, storage, and networking resources as well as infrastructure software, security, and management solutions running in public clouds, dedicated traditional datacenters, private cloud resources, and edge platforms. This IDC Survey examines responses from 254 decision makers with significant control and insight over their organization's critical digital infrastructure decisions.
The survey found that United States–based enterprises have significant interest in use of flexible consumption-based subscription options for sourcing and supporting dedicated on-premises digital infrastructure. These organizations also identify consistent management and security across on-premises, edge, and public cloud infrastructure as an important priority. Public cloud service providers are being seriously considered to shoulder management and security control over on-premises resources in order to provide for more end-to-end consistency and scale.
"This recent IDC survey found that 86% of U.S. enterprises are considering or committing to flexible consumption-based subscriptions for sourcing dedicated digital infrastructure," explains Mary Johnston Turner, research vice president, Future of Digital Infrastructure — Agenda at IDC. "The research shows that concerns about supply chain integrity, data protection, and cost optimization are important drivers. Consistent management is also required. 93% of U.S. enterprises believe it is very important or somewhat important to have a unified management control plane across all digital infrastructure resources. Extended control planes provided by public cloud providers to support both cloud and on-premises infrastructure are of interest to 77% of the organizations polled."
