Future of Operations Worldwide Survey, 2021: Momentum Building for Putting Operations Data in the Cloud

Leif Eriksen

This IDC Survey Spotlight focuses on moving operations data to the cloud. It is a snapshot from IDC's 2021 Future of Operations Worldwide Survey.

It was not that long ago that the suggestion of moving operations data to the cloud would have met with considerable resistance. After all, there are very real concerns about security of the data and its uses. There was also the question of risk versus reward; few understood the value of moving operations data to the cloud. Finally, there was the question of technology maturity and resource limitations. All of which slowed adoption … until recently.

We may look back at 2021 as a tipping point (or maybe it started in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic). Regardless, the data from IDC's first annual Future of Operations Worldwide Survey clearly shows there is momentum in moving operations data to the cloud. Over 80% of organizations — across a wide range of industries — has already put some of their operations data in the cloud. The tide has turned, and IDC predicts that when we do the next survey in 2022, the amount of operations data in the cloud will have doubled.

Note: IDC describes operations as including any activity or physical process that is integral to executing an organization's core business including producing goods or services, moving goods or services, and maintaining assets, infrastructure, or facilities.
