This IDC Survey Spotlight examines the functions that impede digital transformation (DX). Between 2021 and 2019, the key functions most likely to be impeding DX efforts are most likely back-office and support functions. This is a pivot away from market, customer, and operational functions that were more likely to impede an organization's transformation in 2019.

"Unfortunately, there are more functions impeding transformation today, and at higher percentages, than our research revealed in 2019, which means understanding the failure mode and effect of these functions on the enterprise itself and their relative impact on competitive digital offerings and positioning in the market is not equally weighted," according to Shawn Fitzgerald, research director, Worldwide Digital Transformation Strategies at IDC. "The top 6 functions that are most likely to adversely impact your enterprise transformation's efficacy has increased a full 91.9% in 2021 from 2019 levels; this means those underperforming departments have made transforming your organization more difficult, not less, in the past two years. Addressing these underperforming parts of your organization will eliminate their coefficient of drag on your transformation, increasing the speed and rates of success around digital investments and change management efforts."
