Abstract

This IDC study presents the 2021 IDC forecast for the worldwide database management systems (DBMSs) software market from the historical year 2020 to 2025. It includes analysis of market dynamics and commentary on market behavior, along with actionable advice for technology suppliers. It breaks down the forecast by six submarkets: relational DBMS, non-schematic DBMS, navigational DBMS, low-code DBMS, in-memory shared data managers, and data lake management systems. It also provides a breakdown by geographic region and deployment method (on premises/other versus public cloud). It includes a comparison with the prior forecast, along with analysis of the differences.

"While enterprises will continue to renew license and maintenance agreements for deployments on premises, they are expected to migrate those deployments from older 'raw iron' deployments to private cloud and then to the public cloud, where most expansion will take place," said Carl Olofson, research vice president, Data Management Software at IDC. "Migration to the cloud necessitates either moving to newer cloud-native database services or adopting cloud-native versions of existing DBMS offerings. Either way, spending on database is likely to grow substantially as a result."
