Market Analysis Perspective: Worldwide Enterprise Storage Systems, 2021
This IDC Market Analysis Perspective (MAP) summarizes key demand and supply trends driving the enterprise storage systems market. Readers should note that since the 2020 version of this document was published, the Content Infrastructure CIS (which covered file- and object-based storage) was folded into the Storage Systems CIS. This year's MAP includes commentary on market forecast (2021-2025) and competitive dynamics for external storage and file- and object-based storage as well as a discussion of technology buyer requirements and recommendations. The authors also provide guidance to suppliers based on expected short-term and long-term market trends.
While enterprise storage systems overall is a relatively mature market, there are clearly segments of it that are experiencing high growth. NVMe-based all-flash arrays (NAFAs), hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), and software-defined storage are three of those segments that will be experiencing noticeably higher growth through the five-year forecast period. A sea change is happening in unstructured storage, with parallel scale-out file system vendors competing more heavily in the enterprise markets (due primarily to artificial intelligence-driven workloads) and object storage being considered more and more for enterprise workloads requiring lower latencies and higher availability. While the COVID-19 pandemic did impact 2020 revenue, we are seeing a quick recovery and many of the storage subsegments (including the overall enterprise storage market) should actually finish 2021 with revenues slightly above where they were at the end of 2019. Enterprise customers continue to deploy more cloud-based storage as well as more software-defined storage, two segments that are slowly cannibalizing the external enterprise storage markets.
