IDC TechBrief: Advanced Distribution Management Systems

By: Jonathan LangResearch Manager, Worldwide IT/OT Convergence Strategies, John VillaliResearch Director, IDC Energy Insights

Abstract

This IDC TechBrief examines advanced distribution management systems (ADMSs) and their role in the technology landscape for electric utilities. The rise of ADMS does not represent a set of new business functionality so much as it does a shift in the underlying application and technology architecture to one which is modular and platform based. This shift in the technology architecture is critical to utilities' effective navigation of the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into the grid and the need for fast, data-driven, and contextualized decision making.

"Advanced distribution management systems are becoming an essential technology platform for utilities as they manage the increased complexities and ever-changing characteristics of utility distribution networks," says John Villali, research director for IDC Energy Insights.
