IT Productivity Is Top Expected Benefit from FCS Adoption, But Open Source Adopters Care More About Pace of Innovation

By: Rick VillarsGroup Vice President Worldwide Research

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight provides insights from IDC's July 2021 Future Enterprise Resiliency and Spending (FERS) Survey (Wave 7). The purpose of the FERS Survey series (12 monthly surveys) is to explore a range of topics related to IT spending priorities, digital resiliency, and technology/organizational priorities. One of the key topics covered in Wave 7 was the different strategies that enterprises are adopting to take full advantage of the cross-functional sets of foundational cloud services (FCS) for compute, data, and app frameworks. Expectation when it comes to benefits varied by FCS strategy, but the most significant variations relate to the level of commitment to the use of open source technologies.

"With enterprises focusing more on 'outcomes' in their cloud selection processes, the long-term focus for all cloud providers must be aligning solutions with expected benefits. IDC sees significant differences in the benefits that enterprises expect from use of FCS strategies, though improving IT productivity is the most important for all. The greatest differences are for enterprises making a firm commitment to open source options where pace of innovation is critical." — Rick Villars, group vice president, Worldwide Research at IDC.
