Enterprise Workloads Resulting in Broader Adoption of Scale-Out File Storage Architectures

This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights adoption of scale-out file storage architectures to accommodate new artificial intelligence-driven workloads. In primary research completed in September 2021, IDC asked enterprise respondents about their evolving use of file- and object-based storage platforms. Most enterprises have workloads that require scale-out (as opposed to scale-up) file storage, and a surprising number also have workloads that require a true parallel (rather than just a distributed) scale-out file system for performance reasons. Discussions with enterprise customers over the last year indicate that more of them are considering deployment of parallel scale-out file systems to accommodate new artificial intelligence-driven workloads they are deploying as part of digital transformation, and this survey validates that a good number of enterprises have these types of workloads. This does not necessarily mean they will be replacing existing file storage products, but they will at least be considering the addition of parallel scale-out file storage (a system type that in the past was primarily deployed in more technical computing environments).
