Quantum Expands Market Opportunities with New ActiveScale Cold Storage and Managed Object Storage Services

By: Carol SliwaResearch Director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group

Abstract

This IDC Market Note provides an overview of the new tape-based ActiveScale Cold Storage option and fully managed Object Storage Services that Quantum Corporation plans to release in the first quarter of 2022. Quantum aims to improve storage efficiency and density, enhance data protection and durability, and lower TCO through the novel use of two-dimensional erasure-coding algorithms and Redundant Array of Independent Libraries technology the company's engineers designed for object storage on tape. The S3 Glacier-based ActiveScale Cold Storage class will complement Quantum's disk-based ActiveScale object store for active data and provide an on-premises alternative to the cold storage services of public cloud providers. However, Quantum expects the greater potential to expand its business will lie in the managed Object Storage Services that will operate much the same as Amazon's S3 and Glacier but potentially cost less and run in the customer's datacenter, colocation facility, or hosted IT environment.
