Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective takes a deeper look at one data slide published in Worldwide Foundational Cloud Services Forecast, 20212025: The Base of the Digital-First Economy (IDC #US46058920, September 2021), specifically related to the use of open source software as a key enabling technology for supporting a multiple cloud strategy.

"The use of open source software has long been seen as a vehicle for reducing the potential for lock-in and to help drive down overall software costs," said Al Gillen, GVP, Software Development and Open Source at IDC. "The analysis presented in this document suggests that more mature geographies such as North America and EMEA are more comfortable with the notion of embracing a single cloud or that a multiple cloud strategy has benefits that are a worthwhile trade-off. By comparison, AP respondents continue to have concerns about possible lock-ins related to using cloud platforms and see open source software as one of the tools to minimize that potential lock-in."
