Abstract

This IDC Market Note covers many of the most significant announcements Microsoft made regarding security software offerings and cloud management technologies at Microsoft Ignite conference held November 2–4, 2021. In a weird sort of way, this conference was fun-ish. It went a long way toward removing the need for us all to be there in person. And if you think about it, that's what Microsoft is working toward with nearly all its offerings. Two years ago, a few of us viewed major vendor and industry news over a videoconferencing app. In two more years, the 2D reality of flat screens and microphones could be replaced with a more immersive 3D experience if we (the security software industry) can just figure out a way to secure all this stuff.

Microsoft is focused on making security easier, simpler, and more automated with deeper integrations, new templates and filters, dashboards, and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) inputs. Recognizing that today's reality is made up of many best-of-breed technology tools from multiple vendors, Microsoft believes it can develop a "no compromises" integrated alternative for large organizations and SMBs. IDC believes it will be a formidable challenge.
