Abstract

This IDC Perspective examines 5G's evolving role in healthcare through the lens of new 5G use cases in development by healthcare providers, mobile operators, and other technology vendors; operational efficiency improvements; and better patient outcomes.

5G will play a critical role in driving operational efficiencies and providing the transformative patient experiences that are foundational to the digital transformation of healthcare. Capturing, connecting, and contextualizing data insights from the human body, and integrating them with treatment technologies and operational information, requires high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity that can support an increasing number of devices that need reliable connections, exactly what 5G was designed for.

"5G accelerates the democratization and quality of healthcare by allowing patients and healthcare providers to connect wherever, whenever the need arises," says Jason Leigh, research manager, 5G and Mobility Services at IDC. "As 5G matures and is combined with AI, AR/VR, data analytics, robotics, and other complementary technologies, the new use cases that emerge will enable precision mobile healthcare to be delivered in real time for better patient outcomes."
