This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for mobile phone shipments worldwide by device type. The worldwide mobile phone market will reach 1,646.5 million unit shipments in 2021, up 2.4% from the 1,607.8 million units shipped in 2020. From there, total mobile phone shipments will grow to 1,708.0 million units worldwide by 2025, resulting in a CAGR of 1.2% from 2020 to 2025.
"The ongoing issue surrounding logistics and component supply continues to alter the 2021 growth that we initially had forecast at the start of the year," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "Although the rebound from 2020 has been impressive, we continue to drop shipments mainly due to issues caused by the pandemic. Increased logistical cost, labor shortages, and component supply have brought down growth despite strong user demand in most developed and emerging markets. Moreover, the problems could worsen in 2022 considering we are now facing a new unknown variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus with Omicron."
