Abstract

This IDC study analyzes the installed base of smartphone users in the United States by operating system (OS). It combines IDC's extensive knowledge of smartphones, smartphone users, subscribers, subscriber growth, and challenges and opportunities for different operating systems. Findings in this document are based on information gathered from primary and secondary sources during the past six months.

"5G-powered handsets continue to be a driver of the growth in the United States coming off a dismal 2020 that was impacted by the pandemic," said Anthony Scarsella, research director, IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "Although consumers may not be asking for 5G devices specifically (according to our survey data), the likeliness of their next phone supporting 5G is extremely likely. Carriers and retailers have been quick to stock the shelves with 5G-powered devices as vendors continue to release new models for the U.S. market. Apple's current portfolio will consist of 73% 5G-enabled devices by the end of the year, while the total U.S. 5G market share will reach slightly over 60% by the end of 2021."
