Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight shares insights from an IDC special study survey conducted in June 2021 on software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN). One survey question asked what benefits, if any, there are with having integrated management of SD-WAN and the wired and wireless local area network. Respondents indicated there are myriad benefits, including ease of deployment, management, and troubleshooting. IDC refers to integrated management across campus and branch networks as the software-defined branch (SD-Branch) and believes it will become an increasingly important part of enterprise networking in the future.

"As the SD-WAN market continues to mature, organizations around the globe are increasingly considering technology solutions that extend beyond just the domain of branch office WAN connectivity," says Brandon Butler, research manager, Enterprise Networks at IDC. "IDC refers to the integrated management of campus and branch technologies such as SD-WAN, WLAN, and LAN as the software-defined branch. Recent global survey data has quantifiably shown significant interest among enterprises in such SD-Branch approaches."
