The Fundamentals of Synthetic Data for Computer Vision Applications
Abstract
This IDC Market Perspective discusses synthetic data solutions for computer vision. The market for synthetic data is still in its infancy. The demand for the data and the services that provide it will likely increase as computer vision becomes more robust and widely used. Artificial intelligence advances will also play a key role in the production and implementation of synthetic data.
There are many benefits of using synthetic data for computer vision. The use of synthetic data helps maintain the privacy of the original data set while improving upon the accuracy of the model that is being trained.
One benefit of synthetic data is that it can be used to help train new models with a minimal initial data set, which can help eliminate some of the bias from training on a limited amount of data.
Another major benefit is that it does not require any human labeling and, therefore, has great potential to be used in areas where labeling efforts are either too costly or impossible. Synthetic data reduces the need for time-consuming labeling processes, which can free up your workforce to focus on other tasks that would have been more difficult if they were required to label all images.
Companies offering synthetic data solutions are mostly doing so within their existing product offering for computer vision AI software and are largely not offering it as a standalone solution.
"Synthetic data will be a tool used for positive benefit in computer vision AI software applications. It will permit not only the creation of models with sparse data sets but also help with the elimination of bias in models to better reflect real-world edge cases," said Peter Haas, research director, Computer Vision AI Software at IDC. "Synthetic data can provide a path to learning from sparse examples in certain domains, such as medicine, where some rare conditions may only have a few examples in the literature; this will be a game-changing technology."
