Abstract

This IDC Perspective examines the ability of new technologies to support broader consolidation of mixed enterprise workloads onto fewer storage platforms for improved efficiencies. Maturing technologies are changing the conventional thinking in this area, and CIOs should revisit their storage consolidation strategies in light of these trends. The opportunities for lower cost, higher productivity through more centralized management, and improved efficiencies are very real.

"With the new enterprise storage technologies available, the opportunities to improve infrastructure efficiency through denser workload consolidation are greater than ever," said Eric Burgener, research vice president, Infrastructure Systems Group at IDC. "With data growing at roughly 30% a year and IT budgets only growing at 10–12% per year, CIOs should absolutely be pursuing intelligent workload consolidation strategies."
