Abstract

This IDC Survey looks at the current state of smartwatches in the workplace. This includes deployment, popular brands, use of third-party applications, productivity use cases, and health and fitness use cases. Finally, it looks at the associated factors that companies find important and how they are satisfied.

"Although the penetration of wearables into the enterprise is still within the minority, those who have deployed smartwatches have been satisfied with what they can do," points out Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables team. "Smartwatches enable transfer of information — easily viewable on the watch display — for workers to complete their tasks. This can prove valuable to mobile workers who constantly rely on information already transmitted to their smartphones. In addition, this helps teams organize the right personnel and equipment and fulfill customer requests."

As much as smartwatches are helpful to worker productivity, most companies are missing out on the opportunity to use them for corporate wellness programs. "Only a third of our participants indicated that they use smartwatches for corporate wellness programs," continues Llamas. "But among those that do have been able to reap healthcare cost savings over time."
