Video Surveillance and Physical Security: Integrating Video Telemetry into a Comprehensive, Situationally Aware Security Capability
Abstract
This IDC Perspective looks at how to integrate video telemetry into a comprehensive, situationally aware security capability. The objective of physical security is to safeguard an organization's assets: both physical and logical. This depends on understanding the threat, regardless of the source. Utilizing security personnel to correlate and make sense out of the various forms of telemetry available is complex, expensive and, ultimately, unscalable. Technology that integrates protective intelligence into a single pane of glass is the key to achieving situational awareness, which can be used not only to improve safety and security but also to improve the performance of the business.
"Video surveillance is a key component of physical security," noted Mike Jude, research director for Video Surveillance and Vision Applications at IDC. "However, video, by itself, is insufficient to provide situational awareness that is essential to understanding both the threats and the opportunities in the business. Organizations need to adopt technology that supports the creation of a single pane of glass; that is, a single view of the business that brings together all sources of business telemetry, enabling the generation of protective intelligence."
