Abstract

This IDC Perspective focuses on the common and unique cultural experiences global organizations face in implementing hybrid work models in a time of tremendous disruption that includes but spans well beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations are realizing that technology alone is insufficient for implementing hybrid work models; that technical work enhancements that enable hybrid work are innately connected to organizational policies and practices that need equal investment for digital transformation to be successful.

The key to shaking traditional rigid organizational structures is to align technical requirements with best practices for organizational agility. IDC's five-stage hybrid work continuum offers an overview of the spectrum of development for organizations to move toward being a hybrid-first organization.

"As organizations around the globe search to establish hybrid work practices that will work for their organizations, they need to think beyond technology deployments to organizational transformation," said Amy Loomis, research director, Future of Work at IDC. "Our current challenge is that we need to define a path of work transformation that is clear in its purpose while being flexible in its execution in order for hybrid models to be effective for both businesses and employees."
