Abstract

This IDC study presents an update to Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Forecast Update, 2021–2025 (IDC #US48405520, December 2021). It integrates IDC's current IT hardware and consumer electronics products forecasts through 2026 as well as updated HDD and solid-state drive technology transition assumptions. This forecast also reflects updated HDD and SSD attach rate assumptions in systems, particularly where the mass storage device is fungible in the system or device.

Underpinning the worldwide HDD forecast update are IDC's assumptions regarding HDD technology transitions that will affect the pace of HDD areal density growth (see Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Component Forecast, 2021–2025, IDC #US48006020, July 2021), HDD product transitions, and HDD price-per-gigabyte declines for each HDD product segment.

"As the world struggles with supply chain disruptions and rising inflation, the cloud migration journey, which was accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to provide a tailwind to HDD petabyte demand," according to Ed Burns, research director, Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies. "While 2022 faces tough year-over-year comparisons off of the record petabyte shipments in 2021, IDC is forecasting healthy petabyte growth for enterprise non-OEM, OEM server, and OEM external storage as both cloud service providers and on-premises datacenters continue to expand significantly even with the backdrop of continued constraints on component supply and inflationary pressures."
