Abstract

This IDC Survey looks at smartwatch and fitness tracker usage among consumers in the United States. We polled 1,403 current smartwatch and fitness tracker users on:

  • The features they used
  • The features they wish they had
  • Their exercise habits
  • The health and fitness features they use and want
  • Usage of native and third-party applications
  • Which application categories they were interested in
  • Why they do not use third-party applications

"Smartwatches and fitness trackers have become increasingly sophisticated over the past several years, giving users a much more robust experience," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director for IDC's Wearables program. "What began as simple step-counting and time-telling has morphed into fitness and lifestyle companion providing users with quick bits of easily digestible and useful information."

"Yet for all the innovation that has taken place, not all features are embraced the same way," adds Llamas. "Deeper and longer health experiences, third-party applications, and other shortcuts that could make executing tasks more convenient still have yet to gain salience in the market. This is where vendors must highlight their value and show how to use them properly, driving adoption and leading to other new experiences."
