Abstract

This IDC study presents a forecast for the worldwide IDC Global StorageSphere for 2022–2026. It measures the size of the installed base of storage capacity, storage utilization (or data stored), and the amount of storage available each year. The worldwide Global StorageSphere is forecast by region, media type, consumer or enterprise managed, location (core, edge, endpoint), system type or application, and cloud/noncloud.

"The 2021 installed base of storage in IDC's Global StorageSphere came at a cost of approximately $370 billion, yet storage media prices are declining slower this decade than in the prior decade," according to John Rydning, research vice president, Global DataSphere at IDC. "The door is open for a new, lower-cost storage technology to be developed and commercialized to expand the Global StorageSphere more rapidly, especially to address the demand by enterprises for longer-term data retention."
