Package Printing Buying Intentions

Tim Greene

This IDC Survey Spotlight illustrates the findings from the responses of 300+ manufacturers that were asked about their expectations for buying digital printing equipment for producing packaging applications.

In 2018, IDC completed a multiclient study that was an in-depth analysis on the use of digital printing in packaging. IDC's new Digital Printing in Packaging Survey (May 2022) takes a fresh look at digital printing in packaging to determine how some of the historical limitations and drivers of digital printing have evolved. The data shows that manufacturers are now slightly more likely to report that they expect to make investments in digital printing now than they were four years ago. IDC believes the combination of better digital equipment overall, which provides better economics and fewer trade-offs between digital and analog package printing, is one of the main reasons for that slight evolution. IDC also expects that manufacturers are more likely now than they were in 2018 to use their packaging to connect to social media or provide localized information on printed packaging. Furthermore, packaging needs to accommodate ecommerce and comply with the often-changing regulatory requirements as well as meet different manufacturer sustainability goals.

There will be a lot more results from this new survey, and we have the benefit of the previous version to compare to see how the market and the outlook from manufacturers is evolving.
