Abstract

This IDC Perspective lays out the context, challenges, and drivers for multimodal software quality and testing strategies. With digital innovation and execution, software drives and enables competitive position across a myriad of platforms and form factors. Yet the ability to establish effective, cross-platform digital quality and testing strategies lags behind the ability to execute well. This document discusses the demand to provide visibility and coordination across groups that are too frequently disconnected from one another — product managers, developers, business stakeholders, and consumers (as well as supporting needs for auditors and regulatory compliance teams). We will consider evaluating the quality of digital experiences such as accessibility, usability, functionality, and performance; the opportunity to help enable efficient execution by leveraging model-based approaches, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI); and managing across a multimodal, complex range of platforms from desktops to mobile and IoT to packaged business applications. And we recommend strategies to address process change, technology evaluation, and adoption.

"We are seeing the evolution of needed process change with emerging tools that leverage model-based AI approaches to help address the complexity of cross-platform software quality," said Melinda Ballou, research director of IDC's Agile ALM, Quality and Portfolio Strategies. "Between regulatory compliance concerns and user impatience and rejection of software with poor digital quality experiences, demands are ever more intense for effective, cross-stack software quality strategies. This IDC Perspective addresses high-level issues to act as a complement to our IDC MarketScape in this area — IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Mobile Testing and Digital Quality 2022 Vendor Assessment Enabling Multimodal Dynamism for Digital Innovation."
