Worldwide Smartphone Forecast Update, 2022–2026: June 2022
Abstract
This IDC study presents the updated five-year forecast for smartphone shipments worldwide by operating system. The worldwide smartphone market will reach 1.31 billion units shipped in 2022, down 3.5% from the 1.36 billion units shipped in 2021. From there, shipments will hit 1.49 billion units in 2026, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 1.9%.
"ASPs continue to grow despite the fact that we expect shipments to drop almost 4% in 2022," said Anthony Scarsella, research director with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Tracker. "Elevated share of 5G devices in the market has the ASP for 5G shipments growing 25.5% in 2022, as they will account for nearly 700 million devices at an ASP of $608. In contrast, the 4G ASP is expected to be $170 in 2022, dropping to $113 by the end of the forecast period. There has been a slight increase in the ASPs in the short term across all devices due to shortages and the rising costs of components and logistics. However, the trend will remain down over the long term as smartphone ASPs will decline from $402 in 2022 to $366 in 2026."
