Worldwide Server Operating System Environments Market Shares, 2021: OSE Momentum Persists
Abstract
This IDC study provides worldwide market share data for server operating system environment new license shipments, subscriptions, and nonpaid deployments for calendar year 2021 (CY21), for both S-OSEs and virtualized deployment types. It also provides revenue market share data for a selection of commercial operating system suppliers.
"The core operating systems market is far from becoming obsolete," said Greg Macatee, senior research analyst, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group at IDC. "In fact, it is quite dynamic. In 2021, core OSE deployments grew at a double-digit rate, while commercial core OSE revenue grew at a near double-digit rate as customers continue to invest in next-generation IT technologies, undergo digital transformation, and take advantage of the scalability/capability of the cloud. We anticipate for OSEs in support of containerized, cloud-native, and edge technologies to be the market's next frontier, with healthy opportunity persisting throughout the next several years for suppliers that are able to best adapt their products to meet these types of needs within the marketplace."
