The cloud has made the breadth of cybersecurity offers more attractive and practical for the small and medium-sized business (SMB) vector. However, in terms of both budget and talent, SMBs often have to consider IT and cybersecurity in the same fell swoop. SMBs will not have as many options in defense in depth in security tools as bigger companies.

"The cybersecurity options for SMB clients is a story of both historical limitations and new capabilities," said Chris Kissel, research vice president, Security & Trust Products. "The legacy problem is that SMBs are (generally) staffed with generalists as opposed to security specialists. Smaller companies have to make budget-based decisions on the amount of point products and platforms they can afford. On the bright side, the cloud is making the types of analytics such as network detection and response (NDR) and extended detection and response (XDR) affordable for SMBs. Last, managed detection and response (MDR) providers are an increasingly affordable and attractive option for SMBs."
