Abstract

This IDC study analyzes the installed base of smartphone users in the United States by operating system (OS). It combines IDC's extensive knowledge of smartphones, smartphone users, subscribers, subscriber growth, and challenges and opportunities for different operating systems. The findings in this document are based on information gathered from primary and secondary sources during the past six months.

"Premium 5G-powered handsets continue to drive the growth in the United States as 2021 shipments rebounded nicely with 11.8% growth coming off a pandemic-ridden 2020 (-9.8%)," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "However, the selection of more premium models by U.S. consumers has led to refresh rates in the U.S. market extending slightly past 39 months. Consumers are now looking to future proof their purchases by opting for high-end 5G flagships with larger storage options that will last well over three years."
