How Have Technology Innovations Helped Companies Excel Over the Past Two Years?

Carlos Gonzalez

This IDC Survey Spotlight focuses on the technology innovations that have helped manufacturing companies excel over the past two years. For both process and discrete manufacturers, sensors, edge devices, wireless technology, and the cloud have helped them achieve operational excellence and resilience. These tools focus heavily on data gathering, storage, and distribution. Sensors and edge devices help physical assets collect and process data from the manufacturing floor. Wireless technology and the cloud help transmit and distribute data companywide.

IDC's Worldwide Future of Operations Survey 2021 highlights how companies use data to make operational decisions. In our conversations with industry players, digital leaders in process and discrete manufacturing use data to aid everyday decisions (81% for process and 88% for discrete).

According to the survey, future technology investments focus on data-dependent tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, predictive analytics, and cloud technology.

"Digital leaders have invested in data gathering, processing, and management tools over the past two years. By doing so, they are looking to take the next steps of introducing autonomous decision making based on the data collected by using AI and machine learning technology," said Carlos M. González, research manager of Operational Technology at IDC.

This IDC Survey Spotlight is based on IDC's June 2021 Worldwide Future of Operations Survey, which surveyed 181 and 346 organizations in the discrete and process manufacturing industries, respectively.
