Abstract

This IDC study provides a forecast of the installed base of the number of IoT "things" that are connected as well as the data generated each year created by these things. This forecast study also categorizes the devices and the data across several categories including computer vision cameras, consumer/connected home, industrial/commercial, medical, and navigation/automotive/transportation. Definitions of the categories and the devices included in each category is included in the Market Definition section.

"IoT data generated is growing faster than the overall growth of IDC's Global DataSphere," according to John Rydning, research vice president, IDC's Global DataSphere. "Organizations need to take a holistic approach when considering IoT use cases and projects and address the impact it will have on compute and storage infrastructure (including the cloud), the need for data hygiene, data security, and streaming data analytics solution requirements."
