Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight examines storage architecture preferences for modernized edge infrastructure deployments.

In December 2021, IDC's EdgeView Survey asked respondents about their preferred storage architectures both to refresh existing edge infrastructure and when deploying net-new edge infrastructure as part of infrastructure modernization projects.

The available options from which respondents could choose included a traditional server/storage upgrade based on three-tier architectures, a migration to public cloud–based services, a migration to private cloud–based services, a migration to open source cloud platforms, or a migration to an industry-specific solution.

The responses indicate that slightly more than a third of the time hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is chosen, although HCI is used slightly more often for net-new edge infrastructure. Cloud-based options did dominate overall though.
