Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights vital results from IDC's 2022 Consumer Smartphone Survey, focusing on current trade-in trends in the U.S. consumer smartphone market. The survey was fielded in June of 2022 and included 2,118 respondents from consumers across the United States. In addition, this document examines trade-in and private sale return value that consumers are getting when they look to upgrade or get a new device.

"Trade-in value and resale values continue to grow in the U.S. market as more high-end devices consume a larger proportion of the market," said Anthony Scarsella, research director for IDC's Mobile Phone program. "With the ASP of a new smartphone approaching $733 in the U.S. (compared with $460 just five years ago), more residual value remains on smartphones than ever. Furthermore, carrier competition has driven trade-in values much higher in the past few years as it has become a vital tool in acquiring new customers over to their networks."
