This IDC PlanScape offers an approach for CIOs to tailor to effectively review, rate, and select emerging technologies to pilot and ultimately apply for the betterment of the enterprise.

"Many CIOs have had to deal with 'management by in-flight magazine,' a technology that the CEO read about on the plane or that a marketing VP saw at a trade show. Choosing a technology this way seldom leads to a smooth and successful insertion into the enterprise," says Cora Carmody, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "CIOs should have a strategy for managing emerging technologies that motivates a shared appreciation for the needs to be addressed and a cooperative determination of risk/reward potential."
