Abstract

This IDC Perspective highlights the leading ways in which learning management systems (LMSs) have evolved in the face of disruption in the past few years, as well as the major trends shaping the future of these critical applications. Learning management systems have been around for decades, serving as the primary tool for administering online learning. In the mass shift online, the LMS quickly became one of, if not the most, mission-critical applications in education. Today, whether students are learning in person, online, or hybrid, LMSs are now an integral part of the teaching and learning experience.

"LMS vendors have made tremendous strides to transform their solutions to help education institutions adapt to changing learning environments and pedagogical approaches," said Matthew Leger, research manager for IDC's Worldwide Education Digital Strategies research program. "As education continues to evolve, LMS vendors are continuing to develop new and innovative features to support efforts to deliver next-generation online and digital learning experiences."
