This IDC TechBrief examines server-side WebAssembly (Wasm), a binary code environment that enables near-native code execution and portability irrespective of runtime (e.g., browser, server, edge) and/or application development language. Server-side Wasm is in the early days of formation, with various start-ups and a wider open source community building capabilities and likely standards for developers and operators. While in its early days, it has the potential to disrupt in the midterm, especially in relation to cloud-native, serverless, FaaS, and edge applications.
