Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective discusses Red Hat's decision to discontinue Red Hat Enterprise Linux source code on GitLab. Red Hat made waves in the industry on June 21, 2023, when the company announced it was discontinuing the public availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux source code on GitLab.

"The open source software community has always been a vocal and competitive environment, so it came as no surprise that the community responded vocally, and competing vendors and foundations took this opportunity to raise awareness of their solutions," said Al Gillen, GVP, Software Development and Open Source at IDC. "This situation is likely to continue to evolve and won't likely reach some conclusion for months or years to come. In the meantime, the technical bar for clone makers has been raised quite a bit."
