Smart City Asia Pacific Awards 2016 Opens Public Voting for the Best Smart City Projects in Asia Pacific

SINGAPORE, May 23rd, 2016 – Last year, IDC launched the Smart City Development Index in an effort to help establish the fundamental causes of birth, evolution, and survival of key cities in the region. Part of this research includes identifying the top smart city projects in Asia Pacific and recognizing deserving countries and organizations through the Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (SCAPA).

“The Smart City drive is not just an industry buzz – it’s a serious effort that the public sector is closely looking at to transform and modernize key cities in Asia/Pacific. In fact, as much as 92 percent of public sectors in the region believe in utilizing ICT as a means to meet their operational and strategic objectives,” said Gerald Wang, Research Manager, IDC Government Insights, Asia/Pacific.

On its 2nd year of conducting the development index and SCAPA, IDC is once again opening up its research for public voting. This year, 50% of the criteria for judging for the winners will come from public votes while the other half will be based on internal assessment (25% from the IDC Research Team and 25% from the Advisory Council).

“Last year, we had an exciting first year indexing myriad innovative Smart City projects. This led to several interactions with public sector organizations, city leaders and urban planners. We believe this has deepened our understanding of Asia Pacific Smart City programs- their challenges and the major Smart City solutions to digitally transform the domestic Smart City ecosystem so as to stimulate socioeconomic growth and long-term city sustainability," adds Wang.

IDC’s SCAPA will focus on shortlisted cities across 14 Smart City functional eServices such as Transportation; Public Works; Smart Buildings; Smart Grid; Smart Water; Administration; Economic Development; Land Use and Environmental Management; Permitting, Licensing, Inspection and Zoning; Public Safety; Education; Tourism, Arts, Libraries, Culture, Open Spaces; Connected Health; and Social Services.

Voting period will commence on 23 May and ends on 23 June 2016. The public is encouraged to participate via the banner link below (click on the link to access public voting site).

Find out if your city or organization has been nominated for any of the award categories and weigh in on whether it deserves the top spot. Make your vote count and stand a chance to win a camera drone as one of our 5 lucky voters selected through an electronic raffle draw.

The Smart City Development Index is an evolving benchmarking framework that helps smart city planners analyze the current state of their Smart City initiatives. In doing so, these executives can chart future development plans. Annually, IDC Government Insights methodically carries out a six phase benchmarking assessment to determine the top projects across 14 functional smart city domains as described above. IDC’s Smart City Development Index will take into consideration inputs from IDC Analysts across APeJ, public opinion through online voting and the assessment of an International Advisory Council.
