48 projects were shortlisted in at least one of 12 functional smart city strategic domains
SINGAPORE, May 17th, 2018 – IDC Government Insights Asia Pacific opens public voting in its search for the top smart city initiatives in the region (excluding Japan) for the fourth straight year. Out of over 180 smart city project submissions coming from local governments and technology suppliers in Asia Pacific, only the top 48 projects were shortlisted by IDC as a finalist in at least one of 12 functional smart city strategic domains measured in its annual Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (SCAPA).
All finalists will compete with other outstanding projects through IDC analysts’ benchmarking, public voting, and judging from an International Advisory Council. In 2018, 50% of the weightage will come IDC analysts’ benchmarking, the public votes accounting for 25%, while the remaining 25% will be based on the assessment of an International Advisory Council. IDC will declare one winner under each smart city strategic domain.

“We are very humbled to be in our 4th year of benchmarking and celebrating cutting-edge Smart City projects in Asia Pacific. Smart Cities is really about transforming the urban ecosystem for the people living and investing their time and resources within it, with the varying mixes of technologies being used as unique differentiators in the way government organizations, city leaders, and urban planners achieve their strategic goals,” says Gerald Wang, Head of Public Sector, IDC Asia/Pacific.
Wang adds, “As digital economies continually revolutionize the way citizens live, learn, work, and play with their urban ecosystems, much is required of Smart City leaders to be well-versed in strategic foresight and swift, agile change management for actionable benefits to all. Through the IDC Smart City Development Index, IDC is helping Smart City leaders achieve a more complete and real-time view of their Smart City ecosystems’ current state, prior to ambitious, future projections. In addition, we believe that in collecting these benchmarked initiatives from across the world, we are well-positioned to provide strategic advisory - from Smart Cities master planning to governance transformations, engaging line-of-business or non-ICT executive leadership that make critical Smart Cities investment decisions.”
The Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (SCAPA) was created to identify, benchmark and publicly vote on the best projects each year across 12 functional smart city strategic domains. It is an intensive six-month process that tracks and evaluates hundreds of smart city initiatives in Asia Pacific.
The award categories are Administration; Civic Engagement; Digital Equity and Accessibility; Education; Public Health and Social Services; Public Safety; Smart Buildings; Smart Water; Sustainable Infrastructure; Transportation; Tourism, Arts, Libraries, Culture and Open Spaces; and Urban Planning and Land Use.
Find out if your city or organization has been nominated for any of the award categories and weigh in on whether it deserves the top spot.
